Bulk cut & fill: machine control
Residential Subdivision
Topsoil stripped and stockpiled for reuse across the future boulevard network, then bulk cut and fill to bring the pad to rough grade. Material pushed short distances rather than trucked, with the balance resolved on site wherever the volumes allowed it.
Drainage pulled forward to the frontage before fine grade, so the pad sheds water before it is locked under base course. Fine grade to lot corners with the new homes going up alongside. That sequence keeps the pad clean.
Road construction: night shift
Road Construction
Cut to grade, fill placed and compacted in lifts, then shaped with a motor grader and pulled back to the shoulder. Haul units kept moving through the cut while the crew worked the lift behind them.
Working the night shift to hold the schedule against the first hard freeze. Base course placed in condition to compact properly. Cold wet fill shows up as a washout the following spring.
Drainage & utilities: set to grade
Drainage & Underground
Catch basins and service trenches set off the finished elevation, with bedding, backfill and compaction handled to leave a trench that settles properly and passes inspection.
Basin inverts set from finished grade rather than raw grade. It is a small difference on paper and the difference between a basin that catches runoff and one that quietly fills with dirt.
Mass earthworks: cut to daylight
Mass Earthworks
Excavator and dozer working a bulk cut, benching as we went so the face stayed stable and the material stayed workable rather than slumping into the pit.
Water in the bottom of the cut. Every bench graded to fall so water moved off the work area instead of standing in it. That is the difference between working the site and fighting it.
Rural approach: Rocky View County
Residential Site Work
Site preparation, cut to grade, geotextile under the aggregate and placed rock on the exposed edge, built so the upper approach drains across rather than down the lane.
Crossfall on the driving surface and a separator under the gravel. Without the fabric, the fines pump into the base and the approach starts breaking up within a couple of seasons.
Final grade: commercial site
Commercial Site Work
Fine grading around a completed structure, working around finished landscaping rather than through it. Spoil removed, grade blended in, site cleaned up for handover.
Sequencing against the trades already on site. Finish grading is quick to do badly and slow to fix. It goes in after the structure, around the plantings, once.
